The 2010 Limited Edition Levi’s(c) 501 (c) jeans are a thoughtful modern take on a historical pair dating nearly a century to a miner named Homer Campbell.
Campbell purchased a pair of Levi’s(c) jeans in 1917 and padded them with denim patches to protect himself from the hard conditions of the mine. In 1920, he sent the jeans back to the Levi Strauss & Co. headquarters in San Francisco, noting that unlike all the other Levi’s(c) jeans he had worn for the previous 30 years, this pair was falling apart. Upon closer inspection, it became obvious that while the patches had worn through, the original jeans, while faded and well-used, were still in great shape, The original “Homer Campbell” jeans remain a key piece in the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives.
"The Homer Campbell jeans are one of the gems of the Levi Strauss & Co. archives. They are quite special, because we know who their original owner were, which is very rare. Not only have they been personalized to within an inch of their life, the jeans also represent a testament to the toughness and quality of 501(c) jeans, and the part they played in the history of the American West," said Lynn Downey, Levi Strauss & Co. historian.
